TURISMO DE CANARIAS: EL ÁRBOL GAROE (EL HIERRO)
ad campaign

Seven ancient stories from the Canary Islands. Seven animation films that evoke them. A different technique and a different visual language for each one. Unknown to most people outside the archipelago, these stories have been kept alive for centuries because they carry something true about the land and its people.

As we love to work with physical material, everything in the film comes from somewhere real: stones, images cut from books and magazines, fabrics and textures collected over time.

Characters of the natives are built from stone, each one a different combination of rocks, textures and found materials. Every element is cut, assembled and scanned by hand. No brushes, no drawing tools. The characters exist physically before they exist digitally. The analogue process feeds the digital one.

The landscapes are built the same way. Photographs torn, layered and composed by hand, then scanned and assembled in the animation. Once scanned, each element becomes a layer. The characters built from stones gets a skeleton, control points, the ability to move. The tree has over a hundred layers in After Effects. Each leaf is a separate scanned element, animated individually. The sacred tree of El Hierro built leaf by leaf.
